A British man missing in California is believed to have tried to fake his own death.
Police in Monterey County spent two days searching for Kim Gordon, who was visiting the US with his 17-year-old son.
According to his son, Gordon had said he wanted to go for a swim at Monastery Beach, Carmel, on Monday evening but he disappeared.
The teenager called emergency services.
Divers searched the beach but officers became suspicious when the boy’s story changed, with different versions of how the pair had come to the county.
Captain John Thornburg from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, told KION News: “The story we were given by the son can’t answer those questions and that’s where it all starts to fall apart.
“That’s what led to where we are today and why we think what we think.”
The teenager is reported to have returned to Scotland.
Meanwhile, Gordon is still missing and federal agents have joined the hunt.
Speaking to TV station KSBW Action News 8, Commander Thornburg said: “They’re looking for this individual. It’s their speciality, they’re very good at it.”
Gordon, aged in his 50s, is from Inverness, where he is well-known as a busker and trader.
The Inverness Courier said he had raised thousands of pounds for charities over recent years and quoted him as saying Inverness was the greatest city in the world and he would never leave.
